A Rare Expression of Time and Place
Discover the evolution of our Drum Canyon Pinot Noir through an exclusive vertical of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 vintages—each a distinct expression of Sta Rita Hills and the shifting conditions, and hands that crafted them. Grown on the sandier soils of our western-facing slope, this trio offers a study in nuance, site character, and winemaking precision.
Winemaker Notes
2022
A cooler-than-average spring and summer in Sta Rita Hills set the tone for a long, slow ripening season—marked by fog-laced mornings and breezy afternoons. This vintage captures the elegance of that coastal influence with lifted aromatics of pomegranate, rose petal, and fresh thyme. The palate is vibrant and tensile, offering red berry fruit, tea leaf, and a mineral core that lingers with quiet power. A vintage that speaks clearly of place—precise, perfumed, and full of promise.
2021
The 2021 vintage benefited from what winemaker Tyler Thomas called “near-perfect ripening conditions” in Sta Rita Hills. Steady fog and mild temperatures prevailed through harvest, allowing for even flavor development and phenolic ripeness without excess sugar. The wine is poised and textural, with notes of black cherry, wild raspberry, and violet. A subtle saline thread and structured mid-palate point to its coastal roots, while the finish shows length and finesse. This marks the second vintage of the cuvée and what the estate considers its Premier Cru expression.
2020
Defined by persistent marine layers and one of the coolest harvests of the past decade, 2020 in Sta Rita Hills was a year of restraint and structure. Morning fog often lingered well into midday, slowing ripening and heightening aromatic complexity. The resulting wine is taut and focused, offering red cherry, cranberry skin, and dried sage, framed by firm tannins and brisk acidity. Earthy undertones and a hint of crushed granite give it a savory, contemplative character—one that will reward cellaring.
WINEMAKER NOTES
Each vintage in this vertical reveals a distinct expression of Drum Canyon’s coastal site. The 2020 is focused and structured, shaped by a cool, foggy season that delivered red cherry, dried herbs, and firm acidity. The 2021 strikes a harmonious balance—layered and textural, with dark fruit, floral lift, and a mineral finish from an ideal ripening year. The 2022, marked by an extended, mild growing season, offers the most aromatic and vibrant profile yet—perfumed, energetic, and full of finesse, with red berries and a subtle earthiness that speaks clearly of site.
TASTING NOTES
The 2020 Drum Canyon Pinot Noir is taut and savory, with bright red cherry, cranberry, and dried sage framed by firm tannins and a mineral-driven finish. The 2021 vintage offers a harmonious balance of black cherry, raspberry, violet, and coastal salinity, delivering depth and precision with a sleek, focused structure. In contrast, the 2022 is the most lifted and aromatic, showing pomegranate, rose petal, and fresh thyme, all carried by vibrant acidity and an elegant, high-toned finish.
